Local138's Heavy Equipment Operator Training School is situated on over 60 acres in Yaphank, New York and currently has 36 pieces of heavy equipment. With 65 volunteer instructors and 8 paid instructors, this year's 80 apprentices have acess to high-quality skill development training on motor graders, dozers, scrapers, skid-steer loaders, forklifts, cranes, and other heavy equipment.
Local 138's administration building contains three classrooms and a welding shop. Many types of training courses are offered each year including HazMat certification, asbestos certification, OSHA 500, and many other construction-related activities.
Apprentices practice hoisting and 180 degree swings on a mobile crane. The wall in the background is used to practice blind lifts. Local 138 provides all the training needed to pass New York State's Crane Certification.
